Il fut adapté à trois reprises à l'écran : en 1961 (The Innocents) par Jack Clayton, d'après un scénario de Truman Capote, en 1971 (The Nightcomers), par Michael Winner avec Marlon Brando dans le rôle principal et en 1994 (The Turn of the screw) par Rusty Lemorande, avec Patsy Kensit et Stéphane Audran.
